The master plan process will take approximately six months to complete.  The project began with a series of kick-off meetings and interviews on campus on April 4, 2005.  The work is divided into three phases as described below.

Phase 1 – Inventory, Site Reconnaissance & Program Assessment

The master planning process will begin with an investigation to determine existing campus conditions, to ascertain the College’s goals, and to reaffirm the key issues of space efficiency, growth and facilities assessment, as well as recruitment and retention related enhancements.  Building on the information provided in the previous master plan, this will include an inventory of base information, a reconnaissance of the campus and surrounding environs, interviews to identify needs, concerns, policies and priorities, and assessments of pedestrian and vehicular circulation, buildings and landscape elements.

Phase 1 will commence with a series of interviews with institutional leaders, department heads, and various administrators to understand strategic goals and establish the interrelationship between the major academic foundations and the physical plan for the campus.  The campus analysis will focus on definition of space types, adjacencies and character of spaces.

Sasaki will analyze the utilization of instructional space throughout the campus.  Sasaki will provide a space needs analysis based on current student population as well as an analysis of the potential to increase the student .  The analysis will include academic, administrative, assembly, athletic and support spaces.  Throughout the process, Sasaki will continue to work with the College to determine and refine academic, student life, and other priorities.

This phase will conclude with a presentation of inventory and analysis findings, articulation of the driving academic ideas, and a design work session with the Master Planning Committee and other members of the College community to establish the conceptual alternatives that will be the foundation for the plan.

Phase 2 – Alternatives Development

The alternatives phase of work will examine the most favorable options for near-term and long-term campus development based on the organizational concepts developed in Phase 1.  The concept development will address land use, building use, reuse and program accommodations, circulation, open space, and the overall campus integration with the site.  Adjacency relationships and context, as well as phasing, will be of particular concern when considering the siting and reallocation of space.  Building reuse and program location will be articulated.

Phase 2 will conclude with a workshop on the alternatives with the Master Planning Committee to determine a preferred plan of action.  A draft plan will be developed based on the outcome of the work session.

Phase 3 – Final Plan and Implementation

The final master plan phase will be devoted to detailed development and documentation of the plan.  The new master plan will be a guide to decision-making and the physical design of the campus based on the identified goals and objectives of the College.  The plan will define a structure for improvement while remaining flexible in response to resource allocations, unanticipated changes and phasing capabilities.  It will prioritize immediate and long-term strategies, articulate phasing approaches, identify specific target projects for implementation, and include conceptual cost projections for capital projects.  The plan will also provide a foundation document for the College to use in addressing current projects, supporting capital fund requests, and will delineate the “common vision” to be followed in making future development decisions.

Phase 3 and the planning process will conclude with a Master Planning Committee meeting to review the draft plan.  Based on the College’s review, the draft master plan will be revised and finalized.  Phase 3 will culminate in a presentation of the final plan to the Board of Trustees in September.
